During this time of the year, many of us look for ways to help others. In Exeter this might mean donating a Thanksgiving food basket to a family in need through your church or helping out with the Chamber Children's Fund.

What about something more this year? What if you could give the gift of life to someone in need of a life-saving bone marrow transplant, someone in your own community?

If you live in town, chances are you have probably met Sue and Dave Bendroth or know someone who knows them. Sue is recognizable to those at the annual school district meetings in Exeter where she has served as the clerk for longer than she can remember. Dave, a photographer and painter, is a familiar face at Travel and Nature downtown. The Bendroths have seen all four of their children go through the schools here.

Now the community they have been a part of for the past 30 years is coming forward to help find Dave a life-saving bone marrow donor match.

The story began over the summer when Sue and Dave went hiking together. Dave, 57, was more tired than normal. At first, Sue thought she was finally becoming a better hiker than her husband. But then on another hike up Mount Cardigan at the end of August with two of his daughters, Dave felt worse. Like he'd been in a race but never left the starting gate.
