PORTSMOUTH — A new grassroots group working to "responsibly retire" the Schiller Station power plant will hold its kickoff meeting next week.

Citizens for Clean and Fair Power comprises city residents and state and regional organizations concerned about what they say are effects of pollution from Schiller, a coal- and biomass-fired plant, on the city.

Charlotte Olena of the Portsmouth office of Toxic Actions Center said the time is particularly ripe for starting such a group. A state legislative committee is currently considering whether it is feasible to require Public Service of New Hampshire to divest its power-generating facilities — including Schiller Station.
