This week's tips come from Little Tree Education, a school for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Madbury that is committed to alternative, green-oriented practices.

1. Do your kids and the planet a favor and ask school officials to adopt a no-idling policy with their buses. Idling wastes fuel, pollutes the air, and can harm children already sensitive to things such as diesel exhaust. While you're at it, request they switch to biodiesel. It can't hurt to ask.

2. Adding more essential fatty acids to a child's diet — through foods such as wild salmon, walnuts and various other nuts and seeds — can provide children with much-needed brain power for a long day of learning.
