If one of the most successful restaurant chains in America came knocking at your door, eager to contact your services, would you turn them away? For an independent food supplier, this would be a golden opportunity, right?

This was the situation Chris Barstow, president of Favorite Foods in Somersworth, New Hampshire, faced in 2004 when Applebee’s approached his company.

Launched in 1987 with a little more than “a van and a plan,” Favorite Foods aims to provide local, independent restaurants with everything from paper products and cleaning chemicals to prepared appetizers and desserts, meats, dairy products, and produce. The company also offers comprehensive consulting services on restaurant business development strategies. Its client list includes over 20 New Hampshire school districts, along with area eateries like Jumpin’ Jack’s Java in Hampton, Robert’s Maine Grill in Kittery, and The Riverworks in Newmarket.
