In the months since the Clipper City Rail Trail in Newburyport opened, the pedestrian path has become a destination for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. And, if the Green Artists League has its way, it will also become a destination for an alchemical garden, an edible garden and art park designed to strengthen the public's relationship with nature.

The environmental artists collective began work on its alchemical garden last summer, shortly after the rail trail opened. Through a partnership with the city's Planning Office, the artists intend to transform a section along the paved path into their vision over the next couple of years.
