News : Sun shines on Green Alliance: Environmental group eyes expansion, possible franchises

KITTERY, Maine — The Green Alliance has been busy since it began 18 months ago, connecting customers with businesses in the Seacoast that practice and support good environmental choices.

Soon it will cap its number of business members and focus on growing Green Card customers, who use the credit card to get discounts at member firms. It also plans to take its model national.

Founder and Project Director Sarah Brown has been in talks with a group in Arlington, Va., that wants to replicate its success in the Washington, D.C., area.

From there, Brown foresees Green Alliances forming in other spots nationally.

"This model can be plopped down in other areas, but it has to be a very local focus," said Brown from the one-room office in downtown Kittery she shares with one paid worker and occasional interns from the University of New Hampshire....
