WSCA is a mixed format radio station whose mission is to operate a non-profit, listener supported, volunteer driven, non-commercial FM community radio station dedicated to serving the greater Portsmouth community. Portsmouth Community Radio broadcasts diverse and alternative programming which is primarily produced locally and reflects the cultural, educational, artistic, civic, and business fabric of the listening community.

May 03 - 6th Annual Cycle the Seacoast

Portsmouth, NH

Celebrate six years of supporting the mission of the American Lung Association by being one of their annual 200 cyclists or 100 volunteers. This multi-route cycling event includes a route option of 25, 50, or 100 miles of cycling along the historic New Hampshire Seacoast. Cyclists of any skill level can join in on the fun and take in some of the best sights New Hampshire's Seacoast has to offer. If you're not a cyclist, the race offers multiple volunteer opportunities, from just a few hours or the whole day.

May 03 - Green Stride Earth Rock Run

May 04 - Think Bigger, Dig Deeper at NHBSR's Spring Conference

New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsbility (NHBSR) wants to show your organization or business how to learn actionable ideas from leaders in sustainability, as well as how to make sustainability resonate among your peers and employees. Their Spring conference is dubbed Think Bigger, Dig Deeper, with engagement being the key emphasis in discussing how to implement sustainability strategies that will amplify and solidify the efforts of environmentally concious companies. This conference will feature two experts on engagement, helping attendees develop effective strategies for engaging stakeholders in their sustainability efforts, wherever they land on the spectrum of implementation. 

This conference will be filled with actionable ideas and engaging discussion on a wide range of sustainability topics. May 05 - Plugging into Nature: Natural Wonders at Norton Preserve: Walk and Learn

Norton Road, Kittery, ME

This Saturday, why not enjoy a fun little hike through the woods? Kittery Land Trust Stewardship volunteer Gary Mitchell will be leading a nature walk through the Norton Preserve. Participants are encouraged to identify the species of plants and animals they encounter, as well as check out the preserves many vernal pool-like bodies of water.

Participants are advised to bring binoculars, cameras, magnifying glasses, and a nature guidebook. Limit of 15 people in the group. Contact Gary Mtichell to sign up.
 

May 07 - Mama Summit 2015

The event will focus on air quality and energy issues related to children, families, and women. Mama Summit is bringing together parents, grandparents and activists in a non-partisan, MOMpartisan, setting to focus on solutions to environmental issues that threaten the health of our children and stability of our future.

Attendants will convene to hear the views of elected officials and discuss how everyone can make a difference in the decision-making. Before lunch, we will visit the State House and hold a press conference. May 08 - Brave Boat Harbor: Beauty in our Backyard Opening Reception

Join in on the fun at the opening reception of the new art exhibit at the Morgan Gallery at the Kittery Community Center.  The exhibit, Brave Boat Harbor: Beauty in our Backyard, features paintings and photographs by local artists featuring Brave Boat Harbor and Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge.

In addition to enjoying the local art, learn about the Brave Boat Headwaters that are being established by the Kittery Land Trust.

The Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Hit the Decks, a celebratory day for enjoying dining on decks and al fresco patios throughout Portsmouth, which will also include special discounts at area hotels, shops, and other businesses. Not only is Poco’s participating in the all-day event, but the restaurant will also host the sponsor party from 3:00p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

May 09 - 4th NH Komen Race for the Cure

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created. The event raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. This Race is unique in the fact that 100% of the net proceeds are allocated to our mission. 75 percent of the net income stays in our community to help fund local programs offering breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment. May 09 - The First Annual Day of Fitness

Integrated Fitness of Dover's first annual Day of Fitness will be held on May 9th. This is a charity event for Suicide Awareness, as well as an opportunity to celebrate fitness. There will be several fitness competitors and special speakers present, as well as awards given to the winners of each category of events. Events included will be a deadlift competition, pushup competition, plank competition, and a one mile run. This event is free to the public, but a donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is suggested. More specific information about start times will be announced as we determine the approximate number of participants, so if interested please respond or join the event on our Facebook page!

May 11 - Seacoast Bike/Walk to Work Week

May 11 through May 15 is Seacoast Bike/Walk to work week.  Cover your car and pull out your sneakers or bike and walk or bike into your job.  A the same time you get to enjoy the good weather, improve your health, and help the environment all at the same time.  Various events will be going on throughout the week including free breakfasts at locations in Dover, Durham/UNH, Exeter, Kittery, Lee, Newmarket, North Hampton, PEASE, Portsmouth, Rye, and Stratham.

Businesses can compete through the Seacoast Corporate Commuter Challenge to see how can have the most employees participate.  On May 16, from 6 to 8 pm, the Portsmouth Brewery will hold the presentation of the Seacoast Corporate Commuter Challenge trophies and have complementary snacks for all participants as well as some raffles.

 How will transportation change in the Seacoast region in the near future? What are some innovative ways to incorporate more sustainable transportation into the Seacoast region? William M. Lyons, Portsmouth resident and federal transportation planner, will be at 3S Artspace to discuss this and more. Also Seacoast CommuteSmart, COAST Public Transit, The University of New Hampshire Planning, and the Rockingham Planning Commission will be on hand. After the presentation, Seacoast CommuteSmart, COAST, UNH's Wildcat Transit, and Rockingham Planning Commission will participate in a panel. Don't miss this important event!

May 13 - Integrated Fitness Now Offering Chloe's Boot Camp

Integrated Fitness is now offering Chloe's Bootcamp beginning May 13th. This program is designed for all fitness levels and Chloe will lead you through effective workouts whether you are new to fitness or have been a gym rat for years. It will help you melt the bodyfat you have been wanting to get rid of and tone up your entire body. By enlisting in this program you will have two challenging, yet fun workouts each week for 12 weeks. Wednesday's at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's at 9:30 a.m. with classes held outdoors. This class needs a minimum of 5 participants to run.

May 16 - Stonyfield Earth Day 5K and Earth Day Fair

Stonyfield is once again hosting their popular Earth Day 5K and free Earth Day Fair! This isn't your ordinary race, but instead a morning long festival that begins with the 5K walk/run and is followed by a celebration with food, beverages, and live music. Once runners have finished the race they are free to enjoy healthy snacks, featuring Stonyfield products, and can check out the wide array of booths and vendors at the Earth Day Fair. The Earth Day Fair will begin at the start of the 5K and is a free event open to the public. The fair is focused around promoting environmentally friendly products and services, and creating a fun and educational day for the whole family. Kids will enjoy activities such as face painting and balloon animals, while the Beer Garden will feature products from various vendors for the adults. Save the date and don't forget to check out the Earth Day race and fair with Stonyfield because there is not better way to spend Earth Day! 

Registration for the 5K begins December 31, 2014 until May 12, 2015, with reduced registration prices for the who register early.

May 16 - Celebrate the Cog Railway and Mt. Washington

Ride the world's first mountain climbing train to the top of Mt. Washington - the highest peak in New England. Join New Hampshire Public Television for a special celebration on the Mt. Washington Resort, and attend a screening premiere of NHPTV's new documentary, "The Mt. Washington Cog Railway: Climbing to the Clouds".

The Annual Pancake Breakfast is the morning before the Kittery 5K from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. New race registrations and packet pick up is available during this time, but also the morning of the race. The breakfast is $7, and anyone under 12 years old is free.

May 17 - Ninth Annual Kittery Fire Association 5K Run and Walk

The Nineth Annual Kittery Fire Association 5K Run and Walk will be on May 17th from 7:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m. at the Kittery Fire Station. Each team consists of three or more members and teams can sign up as one group online or you can sign up individually and submit the names on race day. Online registration is now open at kittery5k.com and paper registration forms can be printed from the website until May 1st. The registration fee is $20 before May 1st, and $25 any time after. If you register by May 1st you receive a $5 discount, as well as if you're a past registrant. These are additive, which means that early registration plus past participant discounts combine for $10 savings on or before May 1st! The first 200 registrants will receive a free shirt!

May 30 - Windows to the Wild 10th Anniversary

Join New Hampshire Public Television as they celebrate both the 10th anniversary of Windows to the Wild AND host Will Lange's 80th birthday! The big celebration will kick off with a cash bar reception at 5:00 pm, followed by a family style dinner at 6:00 p.m. The celebration itself will start at 7:15 p.m. with a screening of some of Will's favorite moments from the show and a big party! 

All guests will receive a personally inscribed copy of Will Lange's latest book Words from the Wild, a 2 DVD set of Will's favorite episodes, and an orange paisley bandana! Guests can also join Will on Sunday, May 31 for breakfast and an AMC-led hike of Ammonoosuc Lake and Red Bench Trail, although space is limited.
