Green Story

After a four-month battle with a rare form of pediatric cancer, Everett Thomas Cavan passed away on February 22. He was 10 months old.

For Rett’s parents, Deana and Jim, the loss—of their blue-eyed boy, of hope for some sort of miracle—was devastating. But they also knew that, no matter where Rett’s journey led, they would do everything in their power to pay forward the love and support wielded by so many during their family’s ordeal.

To honor Rett’s legacy, the Cavan’s launched Rett’s Roost in early July. The goal of the organization is simple: to provide a sanctuary, in the form of retreats, for families with children afflicted by cancer. By offering everything from art, music and yoga therapy to writing and nutrition workshops, relationship-building to simple rest and relaxation, Rett’s Roost aims to give cancer families a welcome respite from the rigors of their medical demands.

Families attend these “Roosts” free of charge. To cover expenses, Deana and Jim will engage in regular fundraising initiatives—their Harvest Moon Gala Dinner, scheduled for September 27, being just one example. By partnering with community businesses, fellow nonprofit organizations, and select corporate sponsors (particularly those that are sustainability-minded), Rett's Roost hopes to be a beacon information and support for cancer families everywhere -- one their little man can be forever proud of.

Twos have played an important role in Jim and Deana’s healing. Which is why they chose to turn their son’s Angelversary—February 22—into Rett’s Roost’s rallying cry:

2 Love. 2 Live. 2 Heal.
