Having worked at Prelude for close to a decade, Holly Landgarten purchased the catchall boutique store in 1998. Established in 1983 and located on Market Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, Prelude has always specialized in unique jewelry and bath and beauty products made nationally and internationally. Since Holly became the owner and buyer, organic and locally made items have been emphasized. Several local jewelers, Megan Stelzer, Portsmouth, Kim Burke, Kittery Point, Maine, Emma Zirkle, Hampton, NH, Gratefulware, Portsmouth, and Rosie Wonder’s, Brattleboro, Vermont show their wonderful pieces here. Classic designs from all over the world are still sold at Prelude, such as: Roman Glass Company and Ayala Bar Designs both from Israel, Cameos from Italy, Amber from Russia and Poland, sterling silver and gold filled designs from California, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Bali and Thailand. Skagen Watches of Danish design, enjoy a large following among Seacoast customers.
Bath and beauty products have always been a staple at Prelude including such well known brands as Crabtree and Evelyn, Burt’s Bees, Mistral Soaps and Molinard Parfums from France, Mason Pearson Hair Brushes and Combs from London and Royall Fragrances of Bermuda. From Sheffield, England, Edwin Jagger Shaving Products for men have been a special favorite. They include all-natural soaps, creams, aftershave balms, badger brushes, stands, double edge safety razors and shaving sets.
After using and loving Dr.Hauschka Skin Care since 1979, Holly brought the line to Prelude in 1998. Made in Germany, modeled after Rudolph Steiner’s theories of biodynamic gardening, Dr.Hauschka Skin Care is certified organic in Europe. Many more locally made, organic lines include Jenness Farm Soaps from Deerfield, NH, Uncommon Senses Dusting Powders with Lambswool puffs from Dover, NH, Plum Island Soap Company from Massachusetts, Use Me Hair Products from Portland, Maine and Sea Witch Soaps and Salts from Kittery, Maine.
Red Maple alpaca headbands, designed in Eliot, Maine, Kinross cashmere scarves, Nusantara scarves and head bands and a great greeting cards company, Artists To Watch, complete the offers at Prelude.
Poised to celebrate their 32nd year of operation this Spring, the Prelude team remain committed to offering some of the Seacoast’s most beautiful, unusual and expertly made items, all under a name that is as uniquely local as the bricks of the building itself.
