Green Story

Unlike most hairstylests, who spend years honing their craft, Tammy Pierce's passion for fashion had its roots in something more organic. After years working as a nanny as well as in homeopathic and alternative medicines, Tammy entered the hair industry looking for a truly altrustic, holistic approach to a craft where until recently  "going green" was never high on any salon's priority list.

Organic Bonita Salon and Spa uses only organic products that are completely chemical free, and never animal tested. Products including Organic Colour Systems and Shear Miracles both fit this mold. In fact, some of the products Pierce uses are so safe, you can literally eat them with no ill effects!

After just having opened her Main Street Newmarket salon in September, Pierce is already attracting quite a buzz in the the community. After recently joining the Green Alliance as an individual Co-Op member, she decided to take the full plunge, joining the GA as a full-on Business Partner and becoming the second organic salon in the GA, along with Dover's Acorn Organics.

While renting a booth in Newmarket, Pierce began doing extensive online research, looking into the latest in cutting-edge products that were chemical and additive free, organic, and devoid of animal testing. After she began offering these products to her clients -- something others in her salon were still skeptical about -- she began getting rave reviews from her clients, who were as surprised as Tammy was that hair products could be both green and effective.

Outside her new and budding buisness -- the second Downtown Newmarket business to join the GA -- Pierce is also active in the Chamber of Commerce, the New Market Business Assiciation, and now, the Green Alliance. She is also an avid reycler and composter, is gradually retrofitting the entirety of her home's lighting, and prides herself on living and working in the same downtown community. More than anything, Pierce is looking forward to working with fellow GA BPs, and hopes to show how the GA can help Newmarket businesses thrive. "Mine is the epitome of a small business -- it's just me here," says Pierce. "But I felt taking htese steps would be better for the community as a whole, to where it's not just about money, but how we can all make the small business decissions to help change things for the better. But only if we work together... If we know better, we can do better."
