Kennebunk Savings was founded in 1871 as a mutual savings bank. Early on Kennebunk Savings forged a unique identity, that of a fiscally responsible business that benefits the community over the long term, rather than an organization driven by short-term thinking and a focus on stock values. Today the company boasts 15 branches, including a new Portsmouth branch on Maplewood Avenue – their first of what hopes to be a number of Granite State locations.
Throughout the last decade the company added insurance and investment services components, thereby offering a complete suite of financial services and products for personal and commercial customers alike. And while they offer the products and services similar to any big bank, Kennebunk Savings is very much the same community oriented company as it was when it started. Indeed, Kennebunk Savings “Community Promise” to donate 10 percent of their annual profits to local nonprofit organizations has resulted in over $7.5 million in donations since 1994, helping upwards of 350 organizations every year. They also conduct regular giveaways for their used furniture and office equipment – in turn giving the proceeds to charities and nonprofits throughout the area – as well as donating used office supplies to Ruth’s Reusable Resources in South Portland, Maine, a company which offers school supplies at reduced rates to area schools.
On top of their incredible community involvement, Kennebunk Savings is also striving to help render their company as green as possible. They’re in the process of switching out all incandescent light bulbs with high efficiency CFL and LED alternatives, along with having instituted a company-wide recycling program. Water conservation is top of mind; all plumbing fixtures are up-to-date and require less water and bottle-less, filtered water is offered to employees, eliminating the need for bottled water. Programmable HVAC units help assure energy isn’t needlessly wasted, especially during off peak hours. They’ve also taken great strides to assure that both the outdoor lawn treatment and indoor cleaning products are as organic as possible.
But as impressive as their improving green credentials are, Kennebunk Savings commitment to community and local commerce – tenants that have guided the company for nearly 150 years – will doubtless continue to be the cornerstone of the company for years to come.
