Green Story
Jewett Farms & Co was founded in 1999 in York, Maine with the vision of creating a design, furniture, and cabinet making firm celebrating the traditional woodworking art and craft of New England. Today, they are proud to design and build some of the finest cabinetry and furniture pieces in the Northeast. Jewett Farm's goal has been to create a company that not only provides unwavering New England craftsmanship and original designs, but top notch customer service as well. JF&CO consistently maintains the highest standards in both their craft and customer service – period.
Jewett Farms & Co. (and its sister location Jewett Farms Studio) represent a team of truly custom-oriented, furniture-grade designers & cabinetmakers who provide clients, architects, builders, and designers with kitchen, bath, built-in, office, library cabinetry, and furniture. Jewett Farms assists clients with the selection of countertop materials, appliances, hardware, sinks, and color schemes. In addition, Jewett Farms Studio in Newburyport, MA serves as the Northeast showroom for Carlisle Wide Plank Floors.
Jewett Farms is as green a cabinet making business as you'll find anywhere as reflected in their construction, finishing, and recycling practices. Wood sources are local and sustainably harvested. JF focuses on using woods that are locally grown and harvested in New England; they design and build with reclaimed and antique woods as well as with old growth woods. Their finishing arm of the operation utilizes only water-based finishes (paints, stains, glazes, etc). Jewett Farms utilizes cut-offs to make other items such as cutting boards, pullouts, and accessories, to name a few. Any cut offs that cannot be re-invented are provided to employees and local families for home heating purposes. JF sheet stock material is PureBond and formaldehyde free. Sawdust generated from machining is provided to local horse farms for animal bedding. The office utilizes simple methods to decrease waste, such as email invoicing, electronic faxing and an aggressive recycling program in the office, studio, and workshop.
Jewett Farms enjoys a partnership with Carlisle Wide Plank Floors providing clients with a product that not only has been produced using environmentally-sound methods, but is capable of lasting 300 years or more without replacement. JF's cabinetry is similarly designed, built to last a lifetime - a truly sustainable concept.
Jewett Farms & Co. has two local showroom and design studios – their flagship studio in York, Maine and their newly opened (September 2008) studio in the heart of Newburyport, Massachusetts.
What makes us green?
- Receives their wood from local, sustainably harvested sources in New England
- A number of projects utilize "reclaimed" and antique woods -- that is, they use recycled materials
- Finishing products -- stains, etc. -- are all water-based and non-toxic or hazardous
- Uses waste cutoffs from bigger projects to make door stops, cutting boards, pullouts, etc.
- All scraps not used are given to employees and community members for heating wood
- Sheet stock material is PureBond and formaldehyde free
- Sawdust generated from machining is provided to local horse farms for animal bedding
- Business mailing system is almost entirely paper-less
