Green Story
Andy's Greens began in the summer of 2005 selling to local restaurants and at farmers' markets, and was certified organic by MOFGA in the fall of 2006. Owner Andy Gagnon currently farms 2 plots of land in York and Berwick, Maine, and has been gardening in the Seacoast area since childhood. He learned about the benefits of organic gardening while living and gardening in Oregon and California in the 80's and 90's, also working in the gardens at the award-winning Arrows Restaurant in the 2005 growing season. Growing greens has since become a passion and a commercial venture. He started selling greens in 2005 at the York and Wells, ME Farmer's Markets, and in 2006 also sold at the Portsmouth, NH Farmers' Market.
Andy’s goal is to provide the entire Seacoast area with fresh, locally grown, certified organic greens. In the main season, Andy’s offers 5 kinds of organic lettuces (butterhead, batavian, leaf, oakleaf, and romaine) with red and green varieties, arugula, cilantro, kale, chard, sorrel, mizuna, and beet greens. They also serve fresh culinary herbs: parsley, lovage, oregano, summer savory, thyme, and rosemary.
Andy's Greens believes that fresh food should be locally produced on farmland using chemical-free, sustainable practices. Fresh food provides the most taste and nutrition. Local farms preserve green space and use less petroleum in delivering food to customers. Certified organic farmlands are treated with practices that are safe, sustainable, and improve the soil.
