Dining Out with Mother Nature

By Kristyn Lak Miller

PORTSMOUTH – A sure sign that Old Man Winter has finally abandoned the seacoast is when the outdoor decks and al fresco patios of local restaurants reopen for the season. To many, the sight of diners enjoying an outdoor meal is a delicious sign that summer is not far away. Throughout the greater seacoast region, restauranteurs are offering outdoor space with views and atmosphere.

“There’s nothing quite like enjoying dinner and drinks while being caught up in a view that’s purely Portsmouth,” says John Golumb, co-owner of Poco’s Bow Street Cantina and Two Ceres Street. Poco’s outdoor deck in downtown Portsmouth faces the Piscataqua River, and offers guests a right-there view of many local landmarks, from the fleet of tugboats to area bridges.

Poco’s downstairs lounge, Two Ceres Street, throws open its river-facing NanaWall window in season, so its guests can also savor the delights of calm breezes and toast-worthy views.

Close by, The Portsmouth Brewery’s outdoor beer garden has an intimate atmosphere, surrounded by tall brick walls and rooftops, and open to the sky above, with lantern-lit tables and hanging white lights for nocturnal ambiance. “For many, discovering our beer garden is like being let in on a truly terrific secret,” says JT Thompson, official Minister of Propaganda for The Portsmouth Brewery and Smuttynose Brewery. “It’s a really special place to spend some time.”

Kittery Community Market and the Green Alliance Support Buying Local

By John | Jun 17, 2015 | in

Attending a farmers market is the perfect way to give back to a community; buying local to support local. And as this movement grows, the popularity and versatility of farmers markets grows with it. But while the farmers market may appear to be a relatively new trend, it has actually existed in various shapes and forms throughout history. From medieval Europe to feudal Japan to colonial America and into the modern day, local citizens from surrounding towns have gathered in an economic center for a market day, to buy and sell food and other goods to and from one another.

The Kittery Community Market is one such gathering, a weekly outdoor farmers market for local farmers, food producers, fishermen, artisans, and citizens in collaboration with the Kittery Maine Improvement Foundation, a nonprofit incorporated in the State of Maine. The market will be held every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm until October 4th. Their goal is to provide local artisan’s work, agricultural products, and healthy, fresh, locally-prepared foods to residents of Kittery and surrounding areas and tourists to southern Maine and Portsmouth, and to encourage commerce, entertainment and trade.

The Portsmouth-based Green Alliance, a union of local and regional businesses that have sustainable initiatives at the core of their business model, and consumer members looking to make smarter, eco-friendly purchasing options, will be a co-sponsor of the market.

By John Brescia

MANCHESTER - New Hampshire residents are proud of the place they come from and the natural beauty it holds, but steps must constantly be taken to preserve that reputation. Thankfully, organizations throughout New Hampshire are working to make sure the Granite State remains a clean, scenic place for both residents and visitors.

On Monday, June 8, environmental groups from around New Hampshire and New England held the thirty-fourth Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) Conference in Manchester to share information, honor members, and advance environmental causes. The NRRA is an organization active throughout New England dedicated to providing information and assistance in waste reduction and recycling. It also serves to bring together other organizations and responsible businesses who can work together to achieve each other's green goals.

At the conference, held at the Radisson Hotel, the NRRA and other participating businesses and organizations provided guests with information about their activities throughout the region and upcoming events. Representatives from each group set up displays in the exhibit hall to distribute materials and discuss environmental initiatives they either currently have in place or plan to start in the future.

Socially Responsible Investing reaches new asset high

By Sam Lane | Jun 16, 2015 | in

By Michael McCord

The popularity of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) for investors who want to express their progressive values has reached a new high.

According to the most recent trends report by The Forum on Sustainable & Responsible Investment (US SIF), the total of U.S. assets under management using SRI strategies dramatically increased by 76 percent from the period of 2012 to 2014. Overall, those SRI-strategy assets rose from $3.74 trillion at the beginning of 2012 to $6.57 trillion at the start of 2014.

The explosive growth of SRI-targeted investing does not surprise Mike Smith, the Newmarket-based representative for the Progressive Asset Management Group (PAM Group).

“We’ve been watching this trend for a while and this comprehensive report really puts it into perspective,” Smith said.

Since US SIF began tracking SRI trends in 1995 – the recent report is its 10th edition – SRI assets have grown 929 percent, or an annual growth rate of 13.1 percent.

“The assets engaged in sustainable, responsible and impact investing practices at the start of 2014 represent nearly 18 percent of the $36.8 trillion in total assets under management tracked by Cerulli Associates, ” the report stated. “These assets now account for more than one of our every six dollars under professional management. The individuals, institutions, investment companies, money managers and financial institutions that practice SRI seek to achieve long-term competitive financial returns together with positive societal impact.”

Far from the norm for 900 Degrees menu, this burger is undoubtedly a pleasant surprise with its perfectly seasoned ½ pound handmade Angus burger topped with all the fixings, with sides including kettle chips and house made coleslaw. If that’s not enough, 900 Degrees will also have the option of Dad’s Favorite NY Choice Strip, a mouth watering combination of an oven-roasted choice Sirloin, served with a fluffy baked potato and haricots vert.

To finish off the meal right, you have to add bacon! The dessert special, the Big Maple Baked Bacon Stuffed Apple, does just that and then some. The title explains it perfectly as a nice big apple, stuffed with smokey apple wood bacon, brown sugar and cinnamon, drizzled with McLure’s Real Maple Syrup and whipped cream. These specials are sure to supply Dad with the energy he needs to attack the big day. If the specials don’t suit your hero’s hunger, be sure to check out the house menu, offering an array of specialty pizzas. Regular Air Conditioner Maintenance Saves Energy and Money

By Katelyn | Jun 15, 2015 | in

With the first hot days of the season behind us, we have gotten a taste of what this summer may bring. Residents throughout New England are beginning to think about cranking the AC to make their homes more comfortable during the summer. Most homeowners don't think twice about turning on the air conditioning when it gets hot; however, air conditioning units require yearly maintenance and should be frequently checked to ensure efficiency.

Regular maintenance keeps air conditioners running efficiently, reduces unnecessary energy use and extends the life span of the unit. This summer, Aucella Heating and Cooling is offering all Green Alliance members 50% off their unit maintenance (originally $139.00) when scheduled before June 30. Aucella’s comprehensive checklist used to inspect air conditioning units ensures that the system is in compliance with manufacturers guarantees and is ready to be used throughout the summer.

Keep your Home Cool this Summer with an Energy Audit from Yankee Thermal Imaging

By Katelyn | Jun 15, 2015 | in

Yankee Thermal Imaging works to provide homeowners and businesses with top of the line energy consultations to determine how they can increase their energy efficiency and save money. This summer, YTI is offering Green Alliance members an exclusive incentive for energy efficient upgrades to be implemented in their homes. YTI will conduct an energy audit at the normal price, which will then be refunded to the homeowner when they implement qualifying energy upgrades. In addition, YTI will help residents to access available rebates to help offset the cost of implementing the upgrades.

Heat loss and energy efficiency are major concerns for homeowners during the winter months. These issues are equally important to address in the summer months as well. An energy audit assesses the efficiency of a home and determines the levels of insulation, ventilation, and possible cracks or penetrations within the attic, basement areas and structure of the home. When cool or warm air escapes the home, not only are residents losing money, but they are also wasting energy and creating a larger carbon footprint.

YTI then develops an in depth energy analysis of their findings from the audit and recommends the best and most cost effective ways to stop energy loss. When the homeowner decides to implement the proposed measures suggested by their BPI Certified auditor, YTI works with the customer to help them receive possible rebates.

Green Alliance Summer Cruise a huge success!

By Rich | Jun 15, 2015 | in

The Green Alliance prides itself in bringing businesses and consumers together. This weekend, the GA did just that, and in style! The Green Alliance and NHPTV teamed up with the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company and 900 Degrees Neapolitan Pizza for our annual cruise on the M/V Thomas Laighton to promote community involvement, network, and just to have a little well earned fun on the water.

With a terrific turnout of nearly 300 people, we were witness to some amazing weather and a stunning sunset as we toured the Piscataqua River for a great summertime gathering on the water. And what a time it was! With live music, a hopping dance floor, food and libations, members and guests soaked in the last rays of the sun.

“This is the biggest party we have all year,” says Green Alliance Director Sarah Brown. “We’re ecstatic to have NHPTV and 900 Degrees on board with us as well. Not only is it a great party, but it’s a great opportunity for sustainable businesses to meet up with sustainable people”

We would like to thank all of the friends of the Green Alliance, including all of our many business partners for their participation and making the event a huge success.
