Spring is here, crocuses are flowering, the trees are budding, the harsh winter temperatures have changed over to the warm breezes of Spring, and New Hampshire Public Television has held its annual Spring auction.

The Spring NHPTV auction raises money so that they can bring quality programs to the public, for free. This year was the 42nd year of the Spring NHPTV auction.

“The NHPTV Spring Auction is the most significant fund raiser for the Station as well as our biggest Community Outreach event,” Judy Pinkham, Director of Special Events and Auction for New Hampshire Public Television, said. “The timing is at the end of the fiscal year for New Hampshire Public Television – a 501c3 non-profit organization, and the influx of money raised allows us to pay for the high quality programs that the residents of New Hampshire have come to rely on from NHPTV as well as the critical services offered to children throughout the state that prepare them for school.

Pinkham added, “This fund raising effort has never been more important than in the past 4 years after the State of New Hampshire legislature voted to cut funding for the station with just 3 months notice. This funding loss of $2.7 million was what was used to fund programming and services offered throughout the state of New Hampshire.”

The Isles of Shoals Steamship Company contributed to the action in a big way by donating a two hour chartered boat cruise on the M/V Thomas Laighton, a Victorian steamship replica which can carry a group of up to 275 people.

Captain Jeremy Bell, of the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company, said that they have been donating a chartered cruise to NHPTV for several years.

Bell said that the reasons that they donate the cruise are, “We appreciate, and consume, public television. We don't think you can find such varied and quality programming anywhere else.”

He continued by saying that, “We want to help keep public television around for a long time so others can enjoy it and learn from it as we have. The donation is great exposure to a demographic that we feel will enjoy our cruises and that will value our support of NHPTV. A donated service works for a small seasonal business like ours because, hopefully, at auction it brings more cash to NHPTV than the amount of cash we could afford donate.”

The chartered cruise, which is valued at $2,900, brought in $950.00 to support NHPTV!

“Donations are what make the Auction possible,” Pinkham said. “Whether it is $75 worth of gift certificates from area restaurants, a beautiful, handmade quilt, a weekend getaway, a new Toyota vehicle or a private chartered boat cruise on-board the M/V Thomas Leighton, every donation makes a difference. Everything that makes the Auction possible is donated – dinner for our volunteers, milk, soda, coffee, ice cream, paper, pens, chairs, tables, paper plates – and the list goes on and on!”
