A new nature preserve in Kittery, ME, Brake Boat Headwaters is looking for a mascot! Children in grades K-8 are encouraged to submit a drawing of a river otter on an 8 x 11 white peice paper. Put your name and contact information on the back of the paper in pencil. 2 Winners will be chosen from each age group (K - 2, 3 - 5, 6 - 8) by a panel of local artists. Winners will be announced at noon at the Kittery Block Party (June 20th) and will receive a stuffed otter and a $20 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. The winners will be chosen according to the most realistic otter and the otter with the most personality.

A selection of otter art will be on display in The Morgan Gallery of the Kittery Community Center in June. When the drawing is completed, deliver it to one of the designated boxes at Shapleigh, Mitchell, or outside the KLT Office (Rm A105, East Wing of the Kittery Community Center). The deadline for this contest is May 15th at 5:00 p.m. Winners will be announced at the Kittery Block Party, at 12:00 p.m. on June 20th. Winning otters will be used on signs for the preserve, on Kittery Land Trust’s website, in KLT brochures and other material supporting the protection of Brave Boat Headwaters.

The mission of the KLT is to work with community members and neighboring conservation organizations to conserve impotant natural areas that improve the quality of life in Kittery in the present and in the future.

Brave Boat Headwaters is a conservation project that is part of the Kittery Land Trust (KLT). Recently, the KLT was awarded $400,000 from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) to support this project. This is a significant step towards their goal of protecting the 150 acres along scenic route 103.
