PORTSMOUTH - John O'Brien's cleaning company is more than just green in its name, from the products its employees use down to their uniforms, O'Brien has ensured his company is true to its name. Six years after it opened, Green Maids starts the next chapter in its history as it expands into a new location at Regeneration Park in Portsmouth.

Outfitted with uniforms made from organic material, the most environmentally safe cleaning products and equipment available, and a Toyota Prius for travel, Green Maids puts sustainability into every aspect and every decision of its business. Their new location reflects those same strict sustainability initiatives.

In late January, Green Maids moved into Regeneration Park. Formerly a Toyota dealership, the renovated building at 3612 Lafayette Road provides office space for six other eco-focused businesses, and is environmentally friendly itself. The building boasts numerous sustainable initiatives like motion sensor lighting to reduce energy usage, solar panels, a robust composting program, and an advanced rainwater filtration and purification system.

Green Maids’ relationship with Regeneration Park began four years ago when O’Brien first sent his team to clean there. He was taken aback by the facility's commitment to the environment. As his business expanded, and O'Brien began to look for a new location, choosing a space at Regeneration Park was a no brainer, according to O'Brien.

“We had been looking into moving to Regeneration Park for years,” O’Brien says. “It took us a while to make the move because we are a smaller business. Some of the other places I had looked at were smaller and might have been a little more cost-effective, but none of them really did anything for sustainability. I really wanted to work with people and in an environment that had some of the same ideas I have.”

The move represents a major step forward for O’Brien and his company. And O'Brien says that the location's atmosphere is conducive to his employees' work ethic, giving them a headquarters to call their own.

“It’s good to be in the office, it’s good being in a professional environment” O’Brien says. “Other businesses are in there and it’s always very lively. We work all throughout the seacoast and southern Maine so it’s really good for me to have a place where I can go back and forth to.”

The new office has also given a boost to Green Maids’ network. O’Brien’s new green-minded neighbors frequently recommend some of their clients or family. The Route One location has given Green Maids a new advantage with its sign now on a heavy trafficked road. O'Brien says that people have seen the sign and called or stopped in to inquire about Green Maids. That would have been nearly impossible if Green Maids still operated out of O'Brien's home.

Green Maids offers a range of services including residential, commercial and apartment/condo common area cleaning. Green Maids employees work very thoroughly disinfecting countertops, emptying trash, and even making beds. They help with move-in cleanings and window washings as well and can do one time cleans, weekly cleans, bi-weekly cleans, and monthly cleans.

Green Maids’ utmost dedication to sustainability has led to a partnership with the Green Alliance, a Portsmouth organization aimed at bringing together environmentally friendly businesses and green-minded consumers. The office Green Maids is situated in was once held by Simply Green Biofuels, a Biodiesel heating company that was not only the Green Alliance’s first business partner but the first company to move into Regeneration Park.

Business is open for Green Maids, though they are still settling in to the new location. Once the move is final O'Brien says he can start focusing on the big plans he has for Green Maids’ future.

“I don’t know when this will be yet but once everything is all set up the way we want it, I would like to organize an open house,” O’Brien says. “About 90 percent of the material in the building has been repurposed from the old Toyota dealership and it is just a really nice, sustainable office space. I would love to show people around our office and some of the things that are being done to keep this building as green as possible.”
