Blog : Gundalow Announces New Day Camps for 2015

Summer is the perfect opportunity to go outside and try new things! New this year, the nonprofit Gundalow Company is offering two types of day camps for children ages 9 to 12. It is a week-long River Kids day camp and a Crew for a day camp.

The week-long day River Kids camp, will be held August 3rd through 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Campers will spend their mornings on the water engaging in activities on navigation, the environment and maritime history and their afternoons doing shore based explorations. The Crew for a Day camps will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 1, July 15, July 29 and August 12. It will combine dockside activities with hands-on sailing.

Students in both camps will join the crew in setting the sail, steering the vessel, learning to navigate, towing for plankton, analyzing water quality and exploring human impact on our rivers. In addition, children will learn about Piscataqua region’s rich maritime heritage.

The Gundalow Companyis a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect the Piscataqua region’s maritime heritage and environment through education and action, using a gundalow Piscataqua, a traditional reproduction of the flat-bottom gundalow barges that were once prevalent along local waterways. In the past 3 years, it Gundalow has conducted school field trips on its floating classroom for over 6,000 students from 4th grade through high school.

The Gundalow Company is an avid business partner with the Green Alliance. They conduct educational programs designed to teach value of environmental stewardship, provide community outreach aimed at raising environmental awareness, and provide eco friendly Seacoast tourism option. They have also installed a solar panel with the help of SEA Solar Store.

The costs of the camps are $240 per child for the week-long River Kids camp and $30 per child for the Crew for the Day.
