Blog : Healthy Ways to Ride Into the Future

Contrary to belief, some late-night commercials do have value. Just ask Tom Hemenway, co-owner of EZ Electric Bikes & Scooters. One evening, as he watched television, an ad for an electric bicycle came on. After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, Hemenway was thinking about different ways he could exercise to lose weight. Whether it was fate, or coincidence, the commercial not only got Hemenway to take his health seriously, it inspired him and his wife to open their business.

Hemenway heavily researched and bought an electric bike. After one ride, he fell in love with it. The Hemenway’s wanted other people to have the same experience and it wasn’t long before they added EZ Bikes & Scooters as a sister company to their existing business, Autosounds of NH.

“We thought if we loved them, everyone is going to love them,” said Teresa Hemenway, Tom’s wife and co-owner of the company. “They’re for anybody who loves to ride a bike but doesn’t have the stamina for long-distances or hills.”

That was the situation with Tom. He first tried to ride his son’s old and heavy, 21-speed bike and wasn’t having much luck.
“It was hard so we really didn’t ride it,” Tom said.

The e-bike opened new doors for him. He could pedal when he wanted to pedal and use the motor when he wanted help. It allowed him to get the exercise he needed on the bike and enjoy the ride.

An electric bicycle is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor which can be used for propulsion. There are a variety of different types of e-bikes available worldwide, from those that only have a small motor to assist the rider’s pedal-power, to more powerful e-bikes which tend closer to moped-style functionality: all, however, retain the ability to be pedaled by the rider and therefore require no driver’s license or motor vehicle registration.

The e-bikes EZ Bikes offer are powered by lithium-ion batteries and get about 20-40 miles per charge, depending on how much the motor is used and the weight of the rider.

In 2010, EZ Bikes added gas-powered scooters to their line-up and have enjoyed seeing their popularity increase every year, especially here in the Seacoast. Brands include Genuine, SYM and Lance.

“Customers tell us all the time that they see scooters everywhere!” said Teresa.

Scooters aren’t just fun, they’re also environmentally friendly because of fewer emissions, and lower gas consumption is just a bonus.
Tom has lost about 20 pounds and has his diabetes under control mostly because of the exercise he gets riding the e-bike. More importantly, EZ Bikes & Scooters continues to thrive more than five years later. And, as this form of transportation becomes more and more popular for green-thinking professionals, the Hemenways hope to see even more of their product on the streets as the snow clears in the spring.

EZ Bikes & Scooters is very proud of their partnership with the Green Alliance, a union of local, sustainable businesses and members working to unite the green community.
