Gateway: ancient theory, growing green practice

There are good reasons why the ancient arts of taiji (tai chi), qigong (chee kung) and yoga have been practiced by millions of people throughout the world for many centuries: they help people feel better, move more freely, breathe easier and connect with their spiritual selves. They condition the body, improve circulation, develop energy and promote mindfulness – a powerful cocktail for health and wellbeing.

Gateway Taiji, Qigong and Yoga, which opened in October 2012, is a center for practicing and exploring these ancient arts. Its two large studios provide a spacious, sunlit, inviting environment for daily classes and special seminars. The founder, Bill Buckley, intended to create a welcoming, non-judgmental and fun atmosphere where people of all ages and fitness levels can explore, get fit and connect with other like-minded seekers. And, in just one year, he’s done exactly that.

Buckley, who has been practicing and teaching the martial arts and energy work for over 20 years, offers introductory and advanced classes in taiji and qigong. Taiji is a powerful martial art with many levels and applications; it’s best known to westerners as a gentle, flowing dance-like form practiced daily by millions of people around the world. Meanwhile, qigong (chee kung) is best described as Chinese energy work. Based on the principles of acupuncture, qigong teaches the practitioner to feel, develop and lead healing and restorative energy to the body’s organ systems and extremities.

What makes Gateway so green is the incredibly investment in renovations and retrofits that Bill Buckley has implemented. Upon purchasing this historic brick building, Buckley immediately set out to make it as energy efficient as possible, while also assuring that the interior provided the ambiance he envisioned his Taiji, Qigong & Yoga students deserved. Utilizing his Mechanical Engineering knowledge, Buckley completed a series of in-house energy audits of his business. After each audit, he made the requisite adjustments to improve energy efficiency.

From the results of the initial audit, Buckley switched to 100% LED lighting throughout the studio, changing both common rooms and bathrooms as well. Then, he installed three specialized ceiling fans that push the hot air downward in winter, distributing the warm air that rises into the clear story/soffit area of the ceiling (the clear story is an elevated ceiling area that was originally designed to ventilate the factory ovens). He also retrofitted this clear story area with double-paned windows to minimize heat loss in winter. When the doors are opened in the summer, Buckley can capitalize on the natural cool seas by providing a cross ventilation from the naturally occurring sea breezes to reduce the inside temperature. The same fans that push warm air down into the studio in winter, circulate cool air into the studio in the summer.

Then, the green crown jewel: a 72-panel, 18-kilowatt solar system on the building’s roof, installed by fellow Green Alliance Business Partner SEA Solar Store. The system – which is expected to provide up to 95% of the building’s electricity needs – will benefit not only Gateway, but the building’s other tenants, including an Esthetician, Day Spa, Hairdresser, Nail Specialist, Electrolysis and Laser removal services.

GREEN DREAMS: Buckley envisions Gateway as a fitness center, an educational center, a community center for people who want to develop their body-mind connection while improving their balance, circulation and strength, and – to an increasing degree – a beacon of green practices to match the students’ ancient movements. “With Taiji, Qigong and Yoga, there are many paths to go down, each involving its own practices and spiritual journeys, all gateways to the soul,” believes Buckley. “There’s really a kaleidoscope of applications to be pursued, which is something that’s always kept me interested and fascinated. The deeper you go, the deeper it gets.”
