Blog : Smuttynose Opens Arizona Market With Arizona Beer and Cider Company

Smuttynose Brewing Co, New Hampshire’s leading craft brewer, is adding Arizona to its distribution footprint, continuing its 2014 expansion by entering business upstart distributor, Arizona Beer and Cider Company.

While both the state and wholesaler may seem new and uncharted, this business relationship actually began in Chicago in 2009. Arizona Beer and Cider Company is owned by Jim and Jason Ebel, the two brothers behind Two Brothers Brewing Company and previous owners of Windy City Distribution, to whom Smuttynose sells beer in Illinois. That previous experience with an Ebel-managed distributor left a strong impression and when Jim and Jason approached Smuttynose Founder and President Peter Egelston about signing on to their upstart business in Arizona, it was a very easy “yes.” “If the Ebels had asked us two years ago, we would have had to say ‘no’ to such a unique opportunity,” said Egelston, “but the capacity and efficiency of our new brewery means we can now say ‘yes’ to excellent opportunities like this one. These guys really know how to sell and care for craft beer, so I’m sure we’ll make good use of our new equipment.” In addition to Arizona, Smuttynose has entered Texas and Tennessee this year.

ABC is starting strong thanks to 13 years of experience. Initial sales have already begun while 15,000 sq ft of refrigerated warehouse space is online and ready to be filled with the finest beers and ciders. “It’s rare to see such a large cold room right out of the gate with a new operation,” said Smuttynose’s Egelston, “if that’s not a signal of intentions, I’m not sure what is.”

Sales of Smuttynose beer will begin this week, with best-selling Finestkind IPA, Old Brown Dog, award-winning Robust Porter, new addition Vunderbar Pilsner, Tripel and Smuttlabs Schmutzig. Smuttynose Founder and craft beer pioneer Peter Egelston will be visiting Arizona this week for launch events and sales staff trainings. Peter will be in Phoenix November 5 at the Angel’s Trumpet Ale House and in Mesa on November 6 at the Brass Tap. Both events will feature a wide variety of Smuttynose beers and good people from both Smuttynose and Arizona Beer and Cider Company.
