Blog : Ladder the Inflatable Fin Whale Visits Little Harbour School

By Madalyn | Nov 4, 2014 | in

The Little Harbour School is excited to host an interactive program for their students, thanks to the Clews family, who won a contest sponsored by Blue Ocean Society. The School will be visited by Ladder, an inflatable fin whale. Students will not only visit with and learn about the biology, anatomy, and behavior of whales, but also have the chance to go inside of Ladder!

Earlier this year, Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation welcomed a new addition to the family, a 65-foot model inflatable whale, named Ladder, for educational programs and events. Fin whales are the second largest animals to ever live on the planet reaching lengths of 60-70 feet long, so Ladder is an authentic representation of the size of fin whales. The whale is modeled after a real fin whale, who Blue Ocean Society has been studying since 1996.

The model is available for indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) programs at schools, libraries, Scout meetings, and other events. Blue Ocean Society is excited to begin giving presentations with Ladder throughout New England.

Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation is a Portsmouth, NH-based non-profit organization that was established in fall 2000. Blue Ocean Society’s mission is to protect marine mammals in the Gulf of Maine through education, research, and conservation. They work to organize beach cleanups, studying whales, and conducting educational programs. Funding for the Society’s beach cleanups comes from the New Hampshire Coastal Program at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, the NOAA Marine Debris Program, and private donations.
