For some students, the transition from hours outdoors in the summer to being herded into classrooms may come with a bit of a struggle. Let’s face it, not all kids flourish in a traditional classroom, which may lead to frustrations with school and learning. The Acorn School of Stratham allows kids to develop healthy, encouraging learning habits by forging (maybe even disguising) their love of outdoors and hands-on activities with education. To celebrate the new school year, and the unique atmosphere The Acorn School has created, they are hosting a Back to School Comedy Night from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Portsmouth Gaslight Co. The night includes food, drinks and laughter by comedian Wes Hazard, named one of “5 Boston Comedians to Watch” by the Boston Globe.

The night of the event the Acorn School will announce the winner of their ongoing 50/50 raffle. Only 200 raffle tickets are being sold at $50 a piece for a chance to win $5,000. Ticket purchases for the raffle will help support the Acorn School. The winner will be drawn at the fundraising event on November 15, but participants do not need to be present to win. Those interested in the raffle should contact Chrissy Caron at for ticket information.

“The fundraiser will be a great chance for our Acorn community to come together and enjoy an evening filled with laughs and prizes,” commented Sue Bendroth, Executive Director of the school.

The Acorn School eschews the typical pre-K and kindergarten educational setting. Acorn has remained steadfast in its efforts to maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring one-on-one interaction, ease of communication and personal growth for each student. Since its inception in 1972 the school has used its beautiful surroundings in Stratham to help forge curriculum with a philosophy of stewardship within its students.

Touting a diverse curriculum where finger painting and drawing meld seamlessly with Lego-building and sign language, Acorn School has served as a beacon of early childhood education in the seacoast for more than forty years. From science to theater, world culture to creative arts, music to creative writing, no educational stone is left unturned.

The student body is made up of approximately 100 students, ranging from ages three to six. Students come from all over the seacoast, including northern Massachusetts and southern Maine, while the majority hail from local New Hampshire towns including Stratham, Exeter, Portsmouth and more.

At the Nov. 15 event, the silent and live auctions will offer many desirable items for attendees can bid on. The silent auction boasts approximately 50 items on display, while there will be 10 to 15 items to choose from at the live auction. All proceeds will benefit the Acorn School, which relies heavily on fundraising as a non-profit organization, to ensure its unique education remains accessible to future students.

The prizes are plentiful and include items such as four Bruins tickets in Ray Bourque’s box suite (with the Hall of Fame Bruin’s captain as your host), the opportunity to take an aerial photo of your home on a scenic flight for six, Disney World park-hopper tickets, dinner at the romantic Newburyport Lighthouse, Red Sox tickets, a variety of spa treatments, vacation home packages, and many other items donated by friends and family of Acorn School.
