New England winters are often long and cold. That's not a secret. With The Old Farmer's Almanac calling for a colder season than usual, including above-normal snowfall in the northeast, many New Hampshire residents are thinking about their fuel costs early. To help homeowners prepare, Proulx Oil & Propane is offering different fixed-rate plans for their selection of home heating options including oil, biofuel and propane, an environmentally friendly option that is growing in popularity.

"Our goal is to get our customers prepared for the winter months with flexible payment plans and capped rates so they aren’t getting hit with a large heating bill during the three or four coldest months of the year,” said Maribeth Girard, Proulx's Marketing Assistant.
“Propane prices last winter went higher than usual, due to the weather demands and the significant corn harvesting and drying that was done last fall by Midwest farmers using propane to fuel their machinery,” Girard added.

The rise in propane prices were also a result of the fuel's popularity overseas where it is sold by the U.S. However, off-season prices have driven up the demand for propane in New England. Proulx offers a fixed-rate program that allows customers to buy propane and oil at this lower cost. The company also offers budget plans covering 12-months of payments.

“Many of our customers who bought into one of our fixed-rate programs saved some serious money with some saving up to $600 over the course of the season," Girard said.

In 2011, said Girard, domestic propane production from natural gas plant liquids exceeded consumer demand for the first time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that five percent of homes in the U.S. heat with propane. The EIA also expects that homeowners will spend more on heat this winter, but the EIA also reports that natural gas prices dropped from $4.47 million/British thermal units (MMBtu) at the beginning of July to $3.78 MMBtu by the end of the month. The drop in price is an encouraging sign for homeowners looking to make the switch to propane.
“To protect against fluctuations in the market, Proulx offers a basic Guaranteed Price Protection (GPP) prepay plan that enables customers to secure a fixed price for fuel used over a specific contract term," said Girard. “If a customer prefers, they can also purchase this same GPP prepay plan but with the additional benefits of downside protection."

Purchasing downside protection allows Proulx's customers to receive a lower price in the event the daily price of the fuel they pre-purchased should drop below the initial lock-in price during their specified contract term.

Proulx also understands that that many homeowners work within a set budget each month and that prepaying for fuel is not option, but still want to be able to take advantage of a fixed price and downside protection. With the Budget Flex Plan, customers get the fixed price, with downside protection while making affordable payments over 12 months. “By signing up for a budget plan, customers are not hit with a big $500 or $600 dollar oil or propane bill in the winter months,” said Girard.

Propane and biofuel are also eco-friendlier alternative fuel options and one of the reasons Proulx is a Business Partner with the Green Alliance, a union of local and sustainable businesses and environmentally-concerned community members. Community members with the Green Alliance receive $0.07 off posted per-gallon price of B5 Bioheat heating oil and $0.10 to $0.25 cents off posted price for propane. The Discount price for propane is based on annual usage.

Though it may seem too early to think about winter weather, Girard says people have already begun to purchase their heating fuel. “People in New Hampshire and Maine are smart enough to know what a New England winter can be like and after last year's brutally cold season, people are more prepared when it comes to their heating and fuel needs."
