Blog : Nearby Registry Keeps Consumer Dollars in the Local Economy

Are you interested in creating a gift registry for your special occasion, but want to support local businesses? Nearby Registry is the perfect way to tell your friends and family exactly what you would like from small local stores that might not usually have a gift registry!

NEARBY is based around the idea of keeping consumer dollars in local economies as opposed to large corporations. The process begins when small businesses establish a “storefront” on the site and a profile with some of the unique gifts that they offer. Consumers are then able to create an account and customize their registry with items from the local stores they love to shop at. Friends and family can use the registry to purchase gifts for the special day- whether it be a wedding, baby shower, birthday or any other occasion, all while supporting hometown businesses.

The concept for NEARBY developed in 2009 when owner Allison Grappone was getting married and hoped to add items from local businesses to her registry, but there was no registry to fit the couple’s wish list so they established their own. The company was launched in Manchester, New Hampshire in 2011, when Grappone was awarded $25,000 through the Manchester Young Professionals Network, and in just the past couple years has seen great success in New Hampshire. NEARBY has partnered with groups, including Green Alliance, that are also working to connect consumers with local businesses. NEARBY offers customers a chance to gift a Sustaining Membership that provides members with discounts to all of the 100+ GA Business Partners, free access to GA events, and monthly newsletters.

This unique gift registry is a great way for consumers to receive items from their favorite stores, while keeping money in communities. Check out Nearby Registry’s website to see the wide variety of stores to shop from and endless opportunities to create a personalized registry!
