Blog : Martha Stone Becomes a GiGStar

Get it Going has discovered yet another GiGStar, Martha Stone! A leader in the seacoast community for several reasons. Stone first caught GiG’s attention when she successfully led a campaign that raised $5 million for Cross Roads House, a local homeless shelter in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Stone didn’t stop there, next she donated one of her kidneys to a neighbor in need and acts as a role model for anyone who meets her.

When Stone applied for the position as the Cross Roads House Director of Development she realized that more must be done for the shelter. “I knew that if I was going to be fundraising, it would have to be for a cause that I felt 100% committed to and passionate about. Having grown up here, it was a way for me to give back and leave a lasting mark in the community.”

After the $5 million was put to good use, the new and improved shelter can now welcome all who knock on its door. Inside are 96 beds and over 300 volunteers that work seven days a week, year round, to provide a clean facility and hot meals.

To Stone, “Cross Roads House is so much more than a shelter”. It is a home that has several comprehensive programs in place that assist new residents. Each new resident is assigned a case manager, has access to Families First medical and dental assistance, a high school equivalency program, they are put on a list for public housing, and receive job training. A local bank even offers a course on financial independence and management.

The shelter has a “wish list” that mainly helps provide necessities like food, personal care items, bed linens, and bikes that help the residents get to and from work. All donations are accepted and welcome! Stone says that what the shelter needs most is money. “An endowment so that we could focus all of our attention on our residents and their needs.”

With the comprehensive programs and support offered at Cross Roads House, and the commitment from local community leaders like Martha Stone, the hope is that eventually every seacoast child will have a home to return to after school. And the mission to break the cycle of homelessness will have succeeded.
