Blog : Celebrate World Oceans Day

By Clay | Jun 5, 2014 | in

World Oceans Days is June 8 and to do their part, Blue Ocean Society is hosting a day of events on June 7 to celebrate the oceans and all that they provide. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will kick off with the environmental champions award ceremony. The award ceremony will be presented by Senator Nancy Stiles and will be held at the Sea Shell Complex.

When the awards wrap up, the event will move over to and continue on Hampton Beach! Blue Ocean Society will be hosting a beach clean up until 12:00 p.m. to help remove any trash that can be harmful to the ocean. All necessary supplies will be provided to families and volunteers. After the beach clean up everyone is welcomed to stop by the Blue Ocean Discovery Center to observe and learn about the local New Hampshire marine life!

On the following day, June 8, Seacoast Science Center will also be hosting an World Oceans Day celebration! Families are encouraged to come participate in educational events that will help teach about the importance of the ocean’s health and the important role that it has in our everyday lives. Participants will have the opportunity for a hands on experience with a moon snail, a skate or a chain cat shark!

Also bring your rain boots for a chance to explore the tides pools at the center. Participants may also help assemble a new drifter that will ride the oceans current and be able to report its location in real time. There will also be an opportunity to view a screening of “Ocean Frontiers II”. The film focuses on New England residents that are working to sustain ocean resources and to promote the oceans health while sustaining their livelihoods. The Seacoast Science Center will also be unveiling three new interactive exhibits for children.

So please come join and participate in these wonderful events to help celebrate World Oceans Day!
