This weeks green tips come from Dr, Nathan Swanson of Newmarket Dental, a green-minded dental practice. Learn more about Newmarket Dental here

1. Turn off the water! Between wetting our toothbrush and rinsing, a lot of us leave the tap water running while we brush. If you brush the recommended two minutes, this could be wasting gallons of water per day.

2. Recycle your floss dispenser. It may not be as obvious as #1 plastics, like soft drink bottles, or #2 plastics like milk jugs, but most floss dispensers are #5 plastics and are very often accepted by curbside recycling programs. Before recycling pop the case open, remove the floss wheel, and pull out the small metal "tooth" that tears the floss.

3. Try a Preserve Recycline toothbrush. These ergonomically designed brushes, from nearby Waltham, MA, are produced from recycled Stonyfield yogurt cups. When they're worn out, you can return them to be re-recycled into "plastic lumber". For more info on Preserve, click here.

4. Make your own toothpaste. The most important part of brushing is removing plaque and debris, not so much the paste on the brush. So rather than spending money on disposable toothpaste tubes, use baking soda and/or peroxide and a dash of essential oil (peppermint is great). This won't "foam" like store-bought toothpaste, but it works just fine!

5. Choose a Green Dental Office! There's a lot a dentist office can do to make their office more sustainable. The biggest impact is digital x-rays and digitalizing patient records. Other areas include using biodegradable or reusable instruments and materials, LED lighting and working with local specialists and dental labs to reduce carbon footprints and keep revenue within our local economy! (We're not shy to say that Newmarket Dental is green-certified).
