Blog : Purely Organic Targets Beauty and Health of Your Lawn and Garden

Did you know your feet contain over 4,000 pores that are the largest on the human body? Many people take pride in the outdoor appearance of their homes—going to great lengths to grow and maintain beautiful lush gardens and lawns—but are unaware of the negative impacts these chemicals can have on your lawn, pets and even family. Our body absorbs chemicals through the skin at an alarming rate and that can affect our overall health.

Children are at higher risk for health effects from exposure to toxic chemicals than adults because of child's developing internal organs. Traditional lawn care chemicals have the potential to attack the central nervous system and produce symptoms including, but not limited to, rash, chest tightness, asthma-like attacks and blurred or dim vision. It may be difficult to prevent your child from playing in the grass while enjoying the outdoors, but it's an easy decision to hire an organic lawn care company and reduce the risk of a family's exposure to chemicals in their backyard.

Owner of Purely Organic Lawn Care Jay Palladino knows firsthand the impacts lawn care chemicals can have on family pets. Before starting Purely Organic, Palladino found his two month year old puppy, Pal, unconscious after playing outdoors in the yard. That same morning a chemical lawn care company had treated his property. After two nights in the veterinary hospital, Pal was diagnosed and treated for chemical poisoning. After Pal was given a clean bill of health, Palladino requested the company he’d hired use organic fertilizer. When they said no, Palladino decided to start his own organic lawn care company with a focus to help other property owners avoid the same risks. Purely Organic's Residential Foreman Jason Lefebvre also equates traditional lawn care to putting your lawn on drugs.

“As soon as it runs out of drugs it’s going to deplete very quickly,” said Lefebvre.

Traditional chemicals help produce green lawns in the short term, but also kill the biology of the soil by reducing activity levels of beneficial microorganisms.

In their natural state, microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi found in lawns are able to kill pest insects, decrease the spread of disease and help plants gather nutrients and water. The reduction of activity caused by lawn care chemicals decrease this natural ability to control pests and diseases. Without a microorganism’s ability to fight off pests and disease, the lawn requires frequent application of pesticides to maintain the soils overall health. Using organic fertilizers will allow microorganisms to build up in the soil over time, letting it to grow healthier over time.
Chemicals applied by traditional lawn care companies not only affect the health of the soil, but larger aspects of the environment as well. Site Structures of Eliot, Maine, share Purely Organic's commitment to a chemical-free approach by specializing in sustainable landscaping. Both companies are aware of the negative effects chemicals found in fertilizers and pesticides have on bodies of water. These chemicals may leach into the ground, contaminating drinking water as well as ponds, streams and lakes. The nitrogen in fertilizers cause increased growth of algae and plants, which produce algal blooms in freshwater or marine environments. As algae decays, oxygen is consumed in the water, smothering beneficial aquatic plants and wildlife.

Fertilizers have been pinpointed as a source of nutrient pollution in Great Bay, one of the Seacoast’s great natural resources. Two nonprofits that seek to protect this fragile ecosystem are the Great Bay Stewards and Conservation Law Foundation (CLF). By combining law, science and policy, CLF invoked the Clean Water Act to prevent further nutrient pollution to the Great Bay and launched the Great Bay- Piscataqua Waterkeeper program. Both the Waterkeeper and the Great Bay Stewards focus attention on the effects of excess nitrogen in the Great Bay estuary. Though the Great Bay Stewards and CLF have made a focused effort to protect the Great Bay Estuary, they also support companies like Purely Organic and Site Structure’s, who strive to avoid the use of toxic fertilizers and pesticides.

All of these organizations are Green Alliance Business Partners— a union of local sustainable businesses promoting environmentally sound business practices and a green co-op offering discounted green products and services to its members.

Choosing an organic lawn care company or landscaper ensures the well-being and beauty of our natural resources and our communities as a whole.
