Save the rain! Interested in reducing polluted water in the coastal area? Hodgson Brook Restoration Project and Great Bay Community College has partnered with the Great American Rain Barrel Company to offer rain barrels to area residents at a discount to help reach their mission of preserving the water quality and habitats of Hodgson Brook, a body of water that has been historically neglected. Originating in uplands west of Portsmouth, the Hodgson Brook continues easterly to North Mill Pond, which empties into the Piscataqua River.

Rain barrels help conserve water, reduce pollution and save homeowners money. Rain landing on rooftops, driveways, and roads collect and carry pollutants in local streams and rivers, threatening fragile ecosystems that native plants and animals rely on. Rain barrels help offset the growing global concern of water shortage. By storing rainwater, the barrels provide clean water for homeowners to use for watering gardens, lawns, filling pools, and washing cars.

Through this promotion, the Great American Rain Barrel is offered at a low cost of $69 versus the retail price of $119 with a choice between three colors; Forest Green, Earth Brown or Nantucket Gray. These recycled shipping drums stands 39” tall by 24” wide and weigh 20 pounds. The rain barrels arrive with simple instructions for fast and easy installation.

One of Green Alliance’s Business Partners, Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, is responsible for managing and monitoring the Hodgson Brook Restoration Project. One goal of this project is to reduce pollution and clean up the waterways in the Seacoast, focusing on Hodgson Brook, which is a 7-mile stream that flows from Pease Tradeport to Portsmouth. This project contributes to Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation’s mission to protect marine mammals in the Gulf of Maine through education, research and conservation by reducing pollution found in rivers and brooks. This pollution flows into coastal waters with the potential of causing toxic Red tides, which cause potential harm to fish and whale populations. Clean rivers leads to clean coasts, which results in healthy marine life!
