Blog : Adapt designs Unique "Hoot House"

The “Hoot House” is one of Adapt Designs' most recent projects. This unique residential home is nestled between a dirt road and a bird sanctuary (inspiration for its nickname.) Adapt worked closely with the homeowners to build this personalized sustainable home.

The house features many energy saving design choices. Beautiful concrete floors span the entire home, serving as a heat sink to absorb heat and allow it to circulate inside to supplement the houses heating system. The homeowners opted for glass walls and large windows. Adapt utilized this design choice to the home’s advantage by placing the glass walls and windows where they can let in the most natural daylight. Above the bedroom doors are internal pieces of glass with a window glaze. These glass panels allow natural light to flood into the bedrooms, yet still maintain privacy.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are mainly placed on the North West side of the home. This leaves the shared living areas on the South side, which receives more light during the day. Naturally this set up saves the family from using more electricity during the day. Solar collectors are installed in the backyard to assist with heating of the home’s hot water.
